Prepare your favorite restaurant dishes at home for less
With today's economy, most people cannot afford to eat out as often as they want. When money is tight, dining out is one of the first luxuries. You can spend as much for one night at a restaurant as some families spend for a week of grocery shopping! To keep the excitement of dining out, I've started trying to replicate some of my favorite foods from the restaurants I like to eat at.
While doing this, I realized that I could get very close to the restaurant's flavor for only a fraction of the cost. In many cases, you can also make these dishes much healthier for your family. I prefer leaner cuts of meat and always trim the meat that I choose. You can also use reduced-fat dairy products like milk and cheese. Many times, a homemade dish will have fewer preservatives than one that is made in a restaurant, especially a chain restaurant. I like to "improve" some dishes by omitting or substituting ingredients that I don't like. For example, if you don't like mushrooms, you can omit them entirely or replace them with something you do like. Actually, my husband prefers to eat at home because he is concerned about the cleanliness of many restaurants.
Another thing I like to do is mix and match my dishes. Have you ever tried to decide where to eat out and found that you want an appetizer from one restaurant but a main or side dish from another? Cooking at home allows you to have the best of both worlds. You can create endless combinations. Let your family get in on the fun too. Ask your family members to help you choose a portion of the meal. They might think of a dish that you've forgotten about. It's also a great way to get your kids involved.
Many times I can get very close to replicating my favorite dishes from my favorite restaurants just by knowing how they taste. Sometimes this takes a few tries to get it right, and sometimes restaurants do a good job of hiding their secret ingredients. For me, it's part of the fun of creating meals at home.
